THE GIST: Odd Thomas is, well, Odd. First of all, he sees dead people. Or, more accurately, the spirits of the dead that have, for their own reasons, lingered on Earth. These spirits often seek Odd out. Sometimes they need help righting some wrong that has occurred, and sometimes they just need a little help crossing over. Whatever it is they need, Odd is there to lend a hand.
In “Brother Odd”, Odd has secluded himself in a monastery. The peace and quiet doesn’t last long, however, as trouble just seems to follow the poor kid around. One of the monks has vanished, and is presumed dead. Also, Odd’s special abilities are sensing some very unholy presences at the monastery. And then the bodocks start to appear. Unseen by “normal” people, bodocks only show up where some tragedy is about to occur. The more bodocks there are, the greater the tragedy will be, and Odd is seeing quite a few.
Much of the bodock activity is centered around the children who live at the monastery. There seems to be some link between these young victims of domestic violence, and the impending danger that Odd senses. Also, a couple of the monks are acting very strangely indeed. Odd Thomas will have to piece the clues together quickly if he’s going to save the children, and the monastery.
MY THOUGHTS: “Brother Odd” is the third audio book in Koontz’s Odd Thomas series, but I screwed up and listened to it second. Sometimes when you read a series of books out of order, you are left feeling like you missed something, but that wasn’t really a problem with “Brother Odd.
I struggled with this audio book a bit. The plot was slow in developing, and for a while it seemed like there were two separate plots going on which left me feeling a little confused. Overall, I'm glad I stuck with it because it was a good story. I was sad to see Elvis finally move on, but am curious to see what Koontz will do with Frank Sinatra.
NARRATOR: David Aaron Baker is an actor who has made guest appearances in more TV shows than I could list here, and most of which I have never heard of. I’m glad he got into audio books because I am really beginning to enjoy his style. Now that I think about it, it seems like all my favorite audio book narrators were failed actors. TV’s loss is my gain.
FINAL WORD: “Brother Odd” is another good installment in the Odd Thomas series. I think this audio book would appeal to most anyone, especially lovers of suspense novels.

Well you know I'm a Koontz fan as much as a King fan. They walk hand in hand in my book. (ha ha pun intended)
ReplyDeleteElvis moved on. You know I thought that was really a touching scene in this book. He'll never do with Frank what he did with Elvis. lol
Loved this one! But then again, I'm Odd! *wink*
