THE GIST: Somebody just tried to kill WilliamTell Sackett. That same someone burned up all of Tell’s possessions and murdered his wife, Ange. Now, half dead, and with no food, weapons, or provisions, Tell must piece together who is out to get him and why.

For several tortuous days, Tell makes his way across rough country, past patrols of hired guns who are still searching for his dead body, to the nearest military camp where he receives medical aid, food and weapons. Now it's his turn to go hunting.

Tell’s investigations eventually lead him to the Lazy A Ranch and its no-good owner, Van Allen. But maybe he’s bitten off more than he can chew. Van Allen and his hired killers trap Tell in a canyon. They’ve got him out-numbered 40 to 1 and it seems hopeless. But Van Allen forgot one thing; when you mess with one Sackett, you mess with them all. While Tell was searching for Van Allen, word was spreading, and every Sackett in three states is riding in to help their kinsman. Van Allen should have gotten out while he still could.

MY THOUGHTS: To be honest with you, I’m really more of a sci-fi guy, but a while back I listened to a few western audio books as research for a story I was trying to write. The story flopped, but I did find some good audio books, like “The Sackett Brand.”

Louis L’Amour is no poet. His writing is very simple and no-nonsense, but he gets the job done. He creates interesting characters and puts them in interesting situations without using a lot of fancy words. From what I've learned, the Sackett boys appear in many of L'Amour's books and they are the ultimate heroes. Simple folk who don’t go looking for trouble, but will look it square in the eye when it finds them.

NARRATOR: David Strathairn’s unassuming, no-frills style fits "The Sackett Brand" to a tee. His simple reading doesn’t distract from the story, but accentuates it. I especially like how he reads the parts of the old coots who sit around in the saloons spreading gossip. Very apt!

FINAL WORD: “The Sackett Brand” was my very first western audio book, and I was pleasantly surprised. I think any lover of audio books would enjoy this.

  1. OY, a western? Benning will love this I bet. He's a westen kinda guy. :-)
But again, you make them actually sound interesting enough to read!
Thanks for giving me something to look forward to in a western.

  2. Yep! I loved it!

Steve, get the first novel - Sackett's Land, and follow the family from England. You won't regret it! The first Sackett novel published - and the second one I read - was The Daybreakers, which introduces Orin and Tyrel Sackett, explains the reason they left Tennessee, and is told by Tyrel.

    Good stuff.

    Whoo-Hoo!

  3. By the way, at the Louis L'Amour website you can find a lot of audio recordings. Some abridged, some un-abridged. Here is the Audio page for single narrators.
