AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The bird kids are back! Now in their seventh audiobook, Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gassy, and Angel are still doing what they do best: saving the world. Or at least that’s what they’re trying to do, but it’s pretty hard when one evil genius after another keeps threatening.
This time it’s the Doomsday Group. At first glance, the DG doesn’t seem like a bad little bunch at all. Just like the bird kids, they want to save the world. Unfortunately, the best way they can think of to save the world, is to kill all the humans that are destroying it. You gotta love their motto: “Save the world, kill the humans!”
Well, I’m sorry to say that Angel isn’t my favorite Maximum Ride novel. The first three books in the series had a pretty good plot, lots of great action, and some very likeable main characters. Books 4 through 6 had the same fun characters, and the action, but no plot. Book 7? Well, at least the bird kids are still here. The mutant-freak, butt-kicking action scenes have all but disappeared. Also, my favorite bird-kid, Nudge, plays a very small role in this one.
There are some positives to focus on, however. The new guy, Dylan, is now becoming an accepted member of the flock, replacing Fang who has gone out on his own. Fang is not out of the picture though. Using his extremely popular blog, Fang has recruited a gang of his own, adding new characters Star, Kate, Ratchet, Holden, and Maya a k a Max 2. These new characters are not bird-kids, but they are mutants with special abilities of their own. They actually form a pretty likeable group, and look to become permanent members of the cast.
Rebecca Soler, who is about the fourth different narrator for the Maximum Ride series, did a pretty good job. She has sort of a raspy sounding voice that felt right for Max. I especially enjoyed Soler’s characterization of the Doomsday Group members. They are all a bunch of kids who have been brainwashed and are kind of spacey. Rebecca Soler did a kind of tour-guide Barbie voice for these characters that sounded very appropriate and pretty funny too.
Okay, Angel is not my favorite Max Ride book, but still pretty entertaining. And apparently James Patterson is not ready to end the ride just yet. Angel ends with a big bang, literally, and not all of the bird kids are present and accounted for when the smoke clears. Ooh James, you’re so cruel!

I was pretty smitten with I,II and III, in the series, but James lost me on the others and seemed to want to FORCE the kids on us instead of just enjoy the game.
ReplyDeleteFang and Max were IT, and he tossed them aside like the Beastly Warriors who killed for fun?
I'll read Angel, I'm sure. But I'll wait until they get it at the library. Mr. Patterson makes enough money off of innocent victims, I mean children, as it is. :)
