Presents Saturday Matinee

-----Movie Review #1-----

Title: The Postman
Starring: Kevin Costner, Will Patton
Narrator: James O’Hara
Running time: 157 minutes
Released in:1997
Genre: post apocolypse
Filed in: Movie reviews

In the far-distant future of 2013, America is little more than a barren wasteland. One man, a lone traveler, finds an old postman’s uniform and puts it on to keep warm. But the people in the next town he wanders into mistakenly see him as a sign that the country is pulling itself together. Not wanting trouble, the traveler plays along, even handing out some of the mail he found with the uniform, but things quickly grow beyond his control. Everywhere he goes, people are inspired. Others join him as mail carriers, until there is an army of postmen serving a very wide area. But there are others who have profited greatly from the desolation and lawlessness of the times, and they don’t want anyone rekindling the hopes of the people. Can this new breed of postmen finally put a stop to the tyranny of General Bethlehem?
I love post-apocolyptic stories, and this is a good one, based on the David Brin novel of the same title. I also enjoy movies featuring Will Patton, an excellent audiobook narrator. “The Postman” also features an amusing cameo by Tom Petty, and a stirring musical score by James Newton Howard who did the music for some of M Night Shyamalan’s films.

-----Movie Review #2-----

Title: Judge Dredd
Starring: Sylvester Stallone, Rob Schneider
Narrator: uncredited
Running time: 86 minutes
Released in: 1995
Genre: comic heroes
Filed in: Movie reviews

As the movie opens, these lines are spoken by James Earl Jones:
In the third millennium, the world changed: climate, nations, all were in upheaval. The earth transformed to a poisonous, scorched desert, known as the Cursed Earth. Millions of people crowded into a few mega-cities, while roving bands of street savages created violence the justice system could not control. Law, as we know it collapsed. From the decay, rose a new order: a society ruled by a new elite force, a force with the power to dispense both justice, and punishment. They were the police, jury, and executioner, all in one. They were the Judges.
Judge Dredd is a comic book hero created in 1977 by John Wagner, and this film is based on his adventures. This wasn’t a great movie, but comic book fans, like myself, always enjoy seeing their heroes on the big screen. Sylvester Stallone made a pretty decent Judge Dredd, and small-time crook Rob Schneider was his usual funny self.
There is a new Judge Dredd movie, simply titled Dredd, due out sometime in 2012, starring Carl Urban as Judge Dredd.
The narrator of this DVS film was uncredited, and there are no end credits.
