SUMMARY: David Duane is a man’s man, a flying ace, decorated hero of four separate wars. For him, courage is not a decision, it is simply who he is. That is why, when Russian bombers and their escort of fighter planes appear in the skies, David doesn’t have to think twice about jumping in his Fokker bi-plane and taking to the skies once more. Even when the odds are overwhelming, as they are this time, he doesn’t hesitate, he just does what he does best. But this time, his best just wasn’t good enough. After taking a hit, his plane plummets to the snow-covered ground, far below.
When david wakes, he finds himself in a city of golden minarets and peaceful parks. All around him are men and women in uniform. Some he recognizes, they are his buddies, the ones who fought beside him and died, and some wear the uniforms of his enemies, including a handful of Russians that he himself shot down only minutes before his own plane went down. They are not angry with David, however, this place has an air of general comradeship about it.
When David comes before the governor of this strange place, he learns some distressing things. For one thing, he has been here before. This place is not exactly heaven. It is merely a stopping=off point, only for those who have died fighting for what they believe in, those who died heroically and selflessly, before going back to continue their fight. Next, David learns that this will be his final visit here. The next time he dies, it will be for more selfish reasons, and he will join the ranks of the eternally undecorated dead. David is even told the exact day this will happen, and the name of the person who will lead to his traitorous death. Though he begs for a chance to change his destiny, the answer is no, and he returns to the living one last time. The only things he remembers from the golden city, are a date, and a name. He knows he must do something to change his fate, if only he could remember what it is.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: L Ron Hubbard is an excellent storyteller. He grabs your attention right away with thrilling scenes of aerial combat, then brings you down into the golden city of Puhjolh, then wraps it up with more dogfighting. In addition to all the fast-paced action, this audiobook may also cause you to stop and think a bit. I won’t say that it will change your views on death and the afterlife, but you might find yourself examining your life, at least in some small way. On Blazing Wings is a story of love, and destiny, and second chances. It teaches us that our lives are not set in stone, and that we can choose a better path for ourselves.
On Blazing Wings is just one of the hundreds of stories L Ron Hubbard wrote in the 1930’s and 40’s. Galaxy Press has taken on the monumental task of preserving some of those works and turning them into stunning audio productions, complete with music and sound effects. It has all been put together beautifully, the music is stirring and the sound effects are top-notch, and it’s all presented in crystal-clear CD quality. My favorite scenes were the aerial combats: airplanes diving, wind howling, machine-guns blazing. Galaxy Press did a fantastic job of bringing On Blazing Wings to life.
NARRATOR: This audiobook is a full cast audio production. Basically what you have is a main narrator, and then various voice actors reading the lines of dialogue for each character. I like this type of audio production because it really gives the audiobook a much more dramatic feel. I’m sorry to say, however, that none of the cast members were named before or after the story. That’s kind of a pet-peeve of mine, I think the actors deserve credit for their work. At the Galaxy Press website, the narrators are listed as follows: Bob Caso, who I believe is the main narrator, with character voices by R F Daley, Christina Huntington, John Mariano, Phil Proctor, and Kelly Ward.
FINAL WORD: On Blazing Wings is a good story, and a fantastic audio production. This is only the first audiobook I have listened to from the Galaxy Press series, and I look forward to many more.
