THE GIST: Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen survived the hunger games, twice. The second time around, though, she had a little help. As the 75th annual hunger games were winding down, full-scale revolution broke throughout the impoverished districts, and Katniss was rescued from the arena. Her simple act of defiance in the games spoke to people, and inspired them in a way she could never have imagined. Now, like it or not, she has become the figurehead of the revolution; her mockingjay a symbol of hope and freedom for the down-trodden.
Katniss quickly learns that the rebellion is being headquartered in District 13, long thought to be uninhabitable after being bombed to cinders by the Capital during the first rebellion decades before. Little did anyone know that District 13 was still alive, quietly training and stockpiling supplies for the next rebellion, whenever that time came. Thanks to Katnis Everdeen, that time is now.
The rebels slowly push onward, forcing the Capital City peace-keepers out of the districts, but it doesn’t take long for Katnis to grow weary of her role as the face of the revolution. Encouraging the troops and visiting the wounded are just not her style; she wants to fight.
When it is finally time to mount an attack on the Capital City itself, Katniss finally sees her chance. Her publicity team decides to create an army squad out of former Hunger Games survivors, and send them into the Capital, well behind the front lines of course. Things don’t exactly go as planned, however, when Katniss and her squad walk right into a trap. This is just the opportunity Katniss has been waiting for, the chance to go after President Snow, the man who has been pulling the strings of her life, and the lives of her loved ones, for far too long. It’s time for some payback!
MY TAKE ON IT: Suzanne Collins has proven herself to be a very talented writer. The word that comes to mind when I think of her writing style is “sneaky.” No, no, let me explain! You can be reading along and reading along, thinking that there isn’t much going on, and then Bam! You suddenly realize you are knee-deep in an exciting and well-crafted plot.
After reading “Mockingjay”, it becomes clear that Collins is no expert at battle tactics, but that doesn’t matter. She is amazingly adept at covering the range of emotions her characters feel in various situations.
Suzanne Collins began her career in 1991 as a writer for children’s television shows, including the Nickelodean series “Clarissa Explains It All.” She was named one of Time Magazine’s most influential people of 2010.
NARRATOR: Carolyn McCormick did an excellent job with the narration of “Mockingjay” and the entire Hunger Games series. She reads with a lot of feeling and helps the reader identify and sympathize with the characters.
Carolyn McCormick is a film and television actress, most known for her role as Dr. Elizabeth Olivet on the television series “Law & Order” from 1991 to 1997.
FINAL WORD: I loved the Hunger Games series! These audiobooks are highly recommended.
