PUBLISHER’S SUMMARY: Originally published in 1897, H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds was the first novel of alien invasion. Wells' most popular book, it inspired several unauthorized sequels, including Orson Welles' 1938 radio play, several movies, a television show, and many comic book and graphic novel adaptations.
Wells' classic story remains one of the most popular Victorian novels to this day, and it set the tone for all stories of alien invasion that have followed.

MY THOUGHTS: “The War of the Worlds” is a science fiction classic, and a must read for any fan of the genre. The scholars claim H G Wells’ frightening tale of alien invaders from Mars is a symbol of socialism or some such nonsense. Who cares what they say! “The War of the Worlds” is just an excellent piece of science fiction and I could care less if it has some hidden meaning.

It’s hard to believe H G Wells wrote “The War Of The Worlds” more than a hundred years ago; long before space flight, or even flight here on Earth was a reality. Instead of spaceships with rocket engines, Wells envisioned giant capsules being launched from the surface of Mars like bullets from a gun. Once on Earth, the Martians inside the canisters unscrew the lids from the inside, and mayhem ensues. Of course, science and science fiction have come a long way since then, but this is a fascinating look at what an imaginative mind of the 19th century could come up with.

NARRATOR: I wasn’t impressed with Alexander Spencer. Spencer is an English fellow, which makes sense since “The War of the Worlds" takes place in England, but his reading was dull. Also, he reads too slowly. If he wasn't British, I would swear he spoke with a drawl. This is an exciting audiobook and it should have had a more animated narrator.

FINAL WORD: “The War of the Worlds” is a no-brainer for science fiction fans. There are quite a few different recordings of this audiobook available so I would recommend trying one with a different narrator.
