PUBLISHER’S SUMMARY: In the aftermath of his terrible war, Ender Wiggin disappeared, and a powerful voice arose: the Speaker for the Dead, who told the true story of the Bugger War. Now, long years later, a second alien race has been discovered by Portuguese colonists on the planet Lusitania. But again the aliens' ways are strange and frightening...again, humans die. And it is only the Speaker for the Dead, who is also Ender Wiggin the Xenocide, who has the courage to confront the mystery...and the truth.

Orson Scott Card infuses this tale with intellect by casting his characters in social, religious, and cultural contexts.

MY THOUGHTS: “Speaker for the Dead” is the second audio book in Orson Scott Card’s Ender series. Like its predecessor, “Speaker for the Dead” won both the Nebula and Hugo awards for science fiction, and went on to also win the Locus award. All three awards are voted on by readers and are considered to be the most prestigious awards in the science fiction genre.

“Speaker for the Dead” was, perhaps, not as exciting as the first audio book of the series, “Ender’s Game”, but it had a more thought-provoking story, and the characters had a little more depth. That's not so surprising, Orson Scott Card himself explained that this was really the story he wanted to tell, and “Ender’s Game” was more of an introduction.

NARRATOR: Just as with “Ender’s Game”, “Speaker for the Dead” was read by a full cast of narrators. Once again, the names of the narrators were not mentioned anywhere in the recording. The narrators all did a pretty good job and I think it shows extremely poor taste by Macmillan Audio not to mention their names.

This audio book is available on Audible.com, and their listing gives the name of two of the narrators, David Birney and Stefan Rudnicki. I also recognized Scott Brick as one of the readers.

FINAL WORD: “Speaker for the Dead” is another good piece of science fiction. While not quite as exciting as “Ender’s Game", this audio book has a deeper meaning.
