THE GIST: On a routine mission to chart icebergs in the frigid north Atlantic, a Coast Guard airplane spots something very unusual; a small ship embedded in a gigantic iceberg. This is a job for NUMA, the National Underwater and Marine Agency. Admiral James Sandecker, head of NUMA, calls in his best man, Dirk Pitt, to investigate the scene.
When Dirk arrives at the site, he finds that the ship is the Lax which went missing over a year ago. The Lax was an expensive yacht outfitted with a revolutionary probe designed to detect deposits of zirconium on the ocean floor. Now, the Lax is nothing but a burned out hulk. Everything aboard is charred to cinders, including the unfortunate crew. The probe, however, is gone.
Dirk finds just enough clues to lead him to the next stop in his investigation, nearby Iceland. Several attempts on Pitt's life only make him more determined to get to the bottom of the mystery. What he gradually uncovers is a madman’s plot to shift the balance of the world's economy in his own favor, and it's up to Dirk to stop him.
MY THOUGHTS: “Iceberg”is the second audio book in Cussler’s Dirk Pitt series. I have read several of the later audio books in the series and I thought I would really enjoy reading these early ones, but they are just not that great. “Iceberg” has some of Clive Cussler’s trademark action scenes, which are quite good, but the plot of “Iceberg” seemed a little convoluted to me. Also, Dirk Pitt is a chauvinist pig. I am glad to know that Cussler eventually corrects both problems.
NARRATOR: In spite of the questionable story, Michael Prichard’s narration of “Iceberg” is more than adequate. His pace and intonation feel very natural and he is generally easy to listen to.
FINAL WORD: I’ve read much worse audio books than “Iceberg”, but this is not Cussler's best work.

I've never read a Cussler book although the name Dirk Pitt sounded familiar.
ReplyDeleteDid you call him a pig? hehehe (just asking)
Glad to read the review though because now I know I don't want to read this.
