THE GIST: Max, Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, and Angel are back, and they are still doing what they do best: surviving. The human-bird hybrid kids managed to get their hands on some top secret printouts from The Institute in New York City. They have every reason to believe these printouts may contain clues to where they came from, and how they came to be half avian.
The first clue leads them to Washington DC. Before they can do much searching, however, the erasers, wolf hybrid hunters created by The School to track them down and bring them back, show up. The bird kids dispatch the Erasers, but Fang is seriously injured and must be taken to the hospital. Once at the hospital, it doesn’t take long for the FBI to catch wind of their presence. It turns out the FBI knows about them, though, and wants their help in shutting down The School.
What follows, is an unusually quiet period for the flock. They go to live with one of the FBI agents, Ann Walker, who promptly enrolls them in the local school. Friends, field trips, and love interests, it’s all so bizarre to the bird kids. The happy time doesn’t last long, though. The Erasers finally track them down again, and one of them is an exact duplicate of Max. Also, it looks as though they have managed to track down Iggy’s real parents. Will one of the flock be leaving forever?
MY THOUGHTS: “Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever” is the second audio book in Patterson’s Maximum Ride series, and picks up right where “Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment” left off. Patterson keeps up the tension, dropping more clues to the origins of the bird kids, and spicing things up with periodic Eraser attacks. James Patterson does a good job of keeping things interesting.
NARRATOR: Nancy Wu and James Jenner both do a good job narrating “Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever.” I had a problem with the sound quality, though. No, it wasn't bad, it was actually too good. All through the book, I could hear the saliva crackling in their mouths and it made me want to vomit. At first, I thought it was just Jenner, but then I started noticing it in Wu also. I’ve never heard that in an audio book before and it really detracted from the overall audio book experience.
FINAL WORD: “Maximum Ride: School’s Out Forever” has a good story and good narrating, but I really can’t handle that moist mouth noise.

I read the first two tales - "When the Wind Blows" and "Lake House". I'll have to hit the Maximum Ride stories to continue!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the shout-out Benning! Actually I've never listened to an abridged book and consider it a personal affront that anyone would even create one. I'm glad you brought that up 'cause I really should note that on my posts.
