THE GIST: What would you do if you encountered a true miracle of God? Paul Edgecombe did just that, in the form of John Coffey. Paul is the head guard on death row at Cold Mountain penitentiary, and John is a convicted murderer.

Paul knew there was something strange about John the very first day he came to the green mile, so named because of the green linoleum flooring. John had been convicted of murdering two little girls, and the 6 foot 8 hulking black man certainly cuts an imposing figure, but there just didn’t seem to be any violence in him. Then Paul learned of John’s special ability. John Coffey can see illnesses in people, and heal them. He healed Paul’s urinary infection, and later heals the warden’s wife of a brain tumor that was slowly killing her.

Paul just can’t reconcile the gentle and truly good nature of John Coffey, with the double murder he was convicted of, so he decides to do a little investigating. Eventually, he learns that John is not guilty of the murders. There are two problems, however: 1) the evidence is purely circumstantial, and 2) it's 1932, and John Coffey is a black man. Paul knows there is no way any judge will re-open the case, but if he doesn’t do something, John will surely die in the electric chair. It is an agonizing several days for Paul, as he tries to figure out what to do. There's no way to get John out of this, legally, but how can he put a gift from God into the electric chair?

MY THOUGHTS: “The Green Mile”is, without a doubt, Stephen King’s most touching and heartbreaking audio book. Was there ever a more tragic hero than John Coffey? The story is told by an elderly Paul Edgecombe, in flashback mode, and I like how King blends Paul’s past and present, using Mister Jingles, the mouse, as a common thread. I also enjoy Stephen King’s descriptions of the depression era south. He always makes you feel like you are a part of the times.

NARRATOR: Wow! My favorite author, and my second favorite audio book narrator. I enjoy Frank Muller’s style very much. It’s hard to say what I like about him, really. His voices are nothing special, to be honest. He just has a very relaxed style, it sounds more like he’s telling the story, rather than reading it. I've listened to several audio books that Frank Muller narrated, and enjoyed them all very much.

FINAL WORD: “The Green Mile” is a no-brainer. Stephen King and Frank Muller combine to make this audio book a must read.

FILM ADAPTATION: “The Green Mile” was adapted to film in 1999. This beautiful film was directed by Frank Darabont, and starred Tom Hanks, David Morse, and Bonnie Hunt. The film was nominated for the best picture academy award, but lost to "Shakespeare in Love." “The Green Mile" is one of my very favorite movies and Ihighly recommend it.

  2. One of King's better works. Also made a pretty good film - with Tom Hanks - without a lot of editing and messing with the story.
