THE GIST: “The Daybreakers” is the story of how and why the Sackett’s moved west from their home in the Tennessee mountains. To save his brother’s life, Tyrell Sackett is forced to gun a man down. Fearing trouble with the law, Ma urges Tyrell to head west and stake a claim so the family can have a place of their own on the frontier. Tyrell and his brother Oren set out together.

Oren and Tyrell soon take up with a cattle outfit to make a little money. It isn't long, however, before the enterprising brothers decide to start up their own operation. There are rumors of large herds of wild cattle up on the plains, just waiting to be rounded up. The Sackett boys head out with their new friends, Tom Sunday and Cap Rountree.

The rumors prove to be true, and the four ‘punchers manage to round up a large herd and sell them for a huge profit. They spend some years driving cattle and raising the money they will need, before finally settling down near Santa Fe. It’s not all milk and honey, though. Tyrell has made a name for himself as a fast gun, and there are those who would consider it an honor to take him down. And sometimes friends can have a parting of the ways. Oren’s budding political career proves to be a constant irritation to Tom Sunday, who wanted to be a politician himself. It seems inevitable that the two will butt heads, and Tyrell's reputation as a quick draw is bound to put him in the middle. All the Sackett’s want is a place to settle down and start their families, but first they have a bit of cleaning up to do.

MY THOUGHTS: You can’t help but like the Sackett’s. They’re honest, hard-working, and just want to get along. But when trouble rears its ugly head, they'll be the first to look it square in the eye. “The Daybreakers” is an important piece of the Sackett series, as it explains how the Sackett’s got from Tennessee to New Mexico. It also explains why Tyrell became so well-liked among the Mexicans, which L’Amour mentions in later audio books.

NARRATOR: David Strathairn was a good choice to narrate “The Daybreakers” audio book. He has a straight-forward, no-nonsense style that matches the Sackett boys perfectly.

FINAL WORD: I would definitely recommend “The Daybreakers”to anyone who likes stories of the old west. This audio book contains some important elements in the history of the Sackett family.

FILM ADAPTATION: There is a 2009 film titled “The Daybreakers", but it is not based on the Louis L’Amour book.
