THE GIST: At the age of 12, Will Cooper was a bound boy. Unable to afford him, his aunt and uncle send him across the mountains of North Carolina, into Cherokee territory, to operate a small trading post. Will never looks back. Within a few years, Will becomes the owner of the post, along with another. In the meantime, he befriends Bear, the Cherokee chief, who adopts Will into the clan.

But the growing United States wants the land the Cherokee live on. Bear and Will struggle desperately against expansionist bureaucracy to hang on to what they have.

During his long life, Will Cooper becomes a business owner, lawyer, United States senator, civil-war colonol, and “White Chief” of the Cherokee. He amasses a small fortune, and loses it just as quickly, all the while battling the government to keep his adopted people from being relocated to the far west.

MY THOUGHTS: “Thirteen Moons” is a beautifully written portrait of life in the early to mid 1800’s. Frazier’s descriptions make you feel like you’re really there, and you just can’t help but sympathize with the Cherokee as they struggle to retain their native lands. I’ve listened to this audio book several times and will definitely listen again.

NARRATOR: Will Patton has been in several movies, although the only one I can think of right now is “Armageddon” with Bruce Willis. He’s one of those guys who always plays the supporting role, but never the star. His reading of “Thirteen Moons” was just plain great. His simple, unassuming style fits the audio book perfectly.

FINAL WORD: If you’re interested in Indian stories, you’ll love this audio book. Even if you don’t like Indian stories, you’ll probably like it anyway.
