THE GIST: Eddie just died at the age of 83. He spent his entire life working as a maintenance man at Ruby Pier, a seaside amusement park. If you asked Eddie, he would tell you that his life was wasted. He never did anything important, and try as he might he was never able to escape his lowly maintenance job.

But that’s all behind Eddie now. He’s in heaven, but this is not exactly what he expected. He finds that each person that goes to heaven must meet five people; five people who were influential in your life. Each of the five has a story to tell, and a lesson to give.

What Eddie learns is that our lives touch others in ways that we don’t even realize. And by the same token, our lives are touched by others. He also learns that everything happens for a reason. Ruby Pier was not a mistake from which he could not escape, it was his destiny.

MY THOUGHTS: “The Five People You Meet In Heaven” is simply a beautiful audio book, and I find Mitch Albom’s idea of heaven entrancing. When Eddie finally learns the reason why he had to spend his whole life fixing rides at Ruby Pier, it is heart-breaking and uplifting all at the same time.

On the technical side, this audio book is practically a masterpiece. It is enhanced with sound effects and music that really take the story to the next level. I would definitely like to hear more audio books from Hyperion.

NARRATOR: Erik Singer does a wonderful job on “The Five People You Meet In Heaven.” He’s not a master of voices but he manages to make each character distinct. I especially like his enthusiasm on the children's parts.

FINAL WORD: All the elements have come together to make “The Five People You Meet In Heaven”a must read for anyone. I’ve listened to it many times myself and just can’t seem to get enough of this audio book.
