PUBLISHER’S SUMMARY: Lemony Snicket returns with the last book before the last book of his New York Times best-selling A Series of Unfortunate Events.
After any harrowing struggle, it is nice to consider checking into a hotel for a rest. In fact, this might be just the break Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire could use after their wearying deep-sea adventure.
A hotel can be a good choice for any family vacation. With so many floors, such a variety of rooms, and a curious array of guests, spending time in the safety of the right hotel can be the perfect learning environment for children of any age. A keen researcher like Klaus, an adept inventor like Violet, and a sharp-toothed culinary master like Sunny are all sure to find engaging diversions during their stay.
Regardless of how they pass their time while at a hotel, the three siblings will be sure to take in all the interesting sights and sounds, and write them down, just in case this episode turns out to be the darkest yet in a series of unfortunate events.

DEDICATION: For Beatrice: No one could extinguish my love, or your house.

MY TAKE ON IT: Welcome to the fabulous Hotel DeNouement (pronounced day-noo-mah), where there is a mint on every pillow, and a mystery behind every door. After the secret mountain headquarters of the VFD was burned down, the Hotel Denouement became the last safe place for VFD members to gather, but just lately, it doesn’t seem so safe anymore. The unfortunate Baudelaire orphans have been smuggled in and disguised as concierge’s, and they’re seeing some disturbing things. Everyone they have met in their unlucky adventures is gathering at the hotel for what could be a final showdown. The only thing we know for sure, is that Count Olaf is planning something terrible, and the Baudelaire’s must find a way to warn off the Volunteers, before they walk right into a trap!
I gotta tell ya, “The Penultimate Peril” was really feeling like the climax to the whole series of unfortunate events, even though I know there is one more audiobook left. It was kind of neat seeing all the characters from the previous 11 audiobooks showing up in one place. At the end of “The Penultimate Peril”, there is a fire (surprise, surprise) in the hotel. Lemony Snicket hints that many of the people in the hotel died in the fire, but he did not yet reveal which ones. The very last thing we see is Count Olaf and the three orphans sailing off in a boat. The series started off with these four characters, and it looks like that is how it will end too.

NARRATOR: I confess that even though Tim Curry has had a very illustrious career, I never noticed him much. We just traveled in different circles, so to speak. One thing I do remember him from, was a short-lived television series called “Earth 2.” I’m thinking that was probably in the early to mid 90’s., and I believe it only lasted two seasons. Curry played a bad guy in the show, and I guess you could say he did a good job because I really hated his character.

FINAL WORD: Only one more audiobook to go in “A Series of Unfortunate Events”, and thank good ness! I don’t think I can stand anymore misery and woe!
